Ribbon Cutting of Watts Empowerment Center Sports Complex

The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) together with Red Eye Inc., partners, celebrities, guests and Watts residents celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony of the Watts Empowerment Center Sports Complex located at Imperial Courts public housing site.

Hundreds of residents, youth and small children gathered to enjoy an array of exciting events put together by Red Eye, an on-site service provider that operates the Watts Empowerment Center (WEC). The representative from State Assembly Member Mike Gibson’s office was in attendance to present a Certificate of Recognition to Justin Mayo, Executive Director of Red Eye and WEC. Doug Guthrie, HACLA President and CEO was also in attendance. Young fans were spotted taking selfies with actors and athletes, who came to the event to show their support for the Watts community.

The ribbon cutting officially unveiled the opening of the brand new basketball courts and outdoor futsal (soccer) court sponsored by Adidas, US Soccer Foundation, Los Angeles Football Club and NBA2k. The evening started off with the 3-on-3 basketball and soccer tournaments, followed by the slam dunk contest. The main event of the evening featured the Celebrity vs. Watts Local Legends basketball game. Winners of the dunk contest and basketball game received trophies, gift cards from Adidas and other prizes.
