HACLA Provides Online Course to Help Youth Prepare for California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) |
HACLA’s primary focus is to prepare students to pass the CAHSEE Exam on their first attempt and also provide assistance to students who are having problems passing the exam. The HACLA is not only providing access to the program to youth residents but also to students at charter school network Alliance College-Ready Public Schools. In November, 2009, 76 sixth-graders from Alliance for College-Ready Charter School, Middle Academy #4 in Watts visited HACLA’s Nickerson Gardens public housing to register to use the program. Students may use the log-ins at the Housing Authority's computer room or any other computer area. The math tutorials will provide an opportunity for students to also increase ACT and SAT scores. Dr. Michelle Tubbs, director of math instruction for all 16 Alliance middle and high schools, cites these kind of value-added programs as critical tools in the quest to improve student achievement. “Thanks to HACLA, this online program provides encouragement and guidance to work logically through a problem from start to finish,” says Dr. Tubbs. “It’s a great way for kids to hone their skills at home, in school, at a community center or anywhere they can access a computer.” High school graduate who are unable to pass the CAHSEE Exam receive a certificate and not a diploma. They have one year after graduation to pass the CAHSEE to receive their diploma. |
