LAPD Youth Sports Program Changes Hearts, Minds in Watts
WATTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles police officers are on the offense and defense this summer in Watts. They're taking part in Watts Bears, a track and football program that pairs officers with at-risk youth. All the players are 8- to 12-year-old children living in housing projects in Watts. UrbanTXT Sponsors Hustle & Code Hackathon at Nickerson Gardens, Children Make Apps and Websites for the First Time
Nickerson Gardens held its first day-long Hackathon, where one hundred (100) children spent the afternoon designing phone apps and websites to help improve their community. The winning entry was the website Feed Watts, where one could add the date of a food drive or giveaway. HACLA Selected to Participate in President Obama’s ConnectHome Initiative to Ensure Digital Opportunity for All Americans

Twenty-seven Public Housing High School Graduates Receive Academic Scholarships to Pursue Higher Education
The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) awarded twenty-seven (27) students from housing developments academic scholarships towards their college education. Selected students were from multiple developments, and in the fall will be attending a wide range of schools from UC Berkeley to the San Francisco Art Institute. Mar Vista Gardens Step Team Perform at the National Conference in Chicago

Grand Opening of Pueblo Del Rio's
The youth at Pueblo Del Rio have a new way to explore the love of reading thanks to a generous donation from the LAPD Police Athletic & Activities League (PAAL). October 8, 2014 - The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles helped celebrate the grand opening of the new Star Apartments in downtown Los Angeles. Skid Row’s new Star Apartments consist of 102 pre-fabricated modular apartments in a sleek and well-designed building developed by the Skid Row Housing Trust. The new Star Apartments provide, "healthy and sustainable homes with supportive services to disabled men and women experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles" (www.Skidrow.org).
