The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) joined A Community of Friends (ACOF) along with Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilwoman Nury Martinez and other partners in celebration of the groundbreaking ceremony of Casa Del Sol Apartment complex in Sun Valley.
Developed by ACOF, Casa Del Sol is one of the first projects that received funding from Proposition HHH bond measure. Once vacant and underutilized site, Casa Del Sol will soon become a 44-unit supportive housing community that will house seniors experiencing homelessness as well as seniors with special needs.
“There are thousands of people in Los Angeles without a home. For those with mental health and other disabilities, it is even harder to secure and maintain stability in housing. At ACOF, we believe that foundation for personal growth and self-actualization can only occur when we have a place to put our heads at night,” said Dora Gallo, President and CEO of ACOF.
“Los Angeles is truly fortunate to have organizations like ACOF and LA Family Housing and others that have both the commitment to the community as well as the capacity to take on these major challenges that the city has. Developments such as Casa Del Sol are truly attributes to the community: they don’t take away, they add to the community,” said Douglas Guthrie, HACLA President and CEO.
Casa Del Sol was designed to meet high environmental efficiency and will pursue LEED Gold Certification. Community Development Commission/Housing Authority of the County of Los Angeles (CDC/HACoLA) is providing financing of $3 million in Mental Health Housing Funds to assist with the development of the project.
Some of the amenities that will be available for the residents on-site include: a community room, kitchen, fitness center, garden, computer room, laundry rooms, outdoor courtyard and BBQ area. In addition, ACOF will serve as a lead service provider and will offer case management, life building skills, eviction prevention, physical and behavioral healthcare services, all aimed to help seniors to stay housed and improve their physical and mental health.
