Meet Guadalupe Felix: Youth of the Quarter

Guadalupe Felix is a Junior at Gonzalo Mendez High School in Boyle Heights. She has lived at the Estrada Courts public housing community in Boyle Heights for the past nine years. We are highlighting her as the youth of the quarter. Lupe’s passion for writing and her desire to use her talents to be the voice of her community is deserving of praise.

“Growing up in a low income community has played a big role in my activism … I sought a way to voice my community's concerns and accomplishments through writing,” explained Lupe. “While writing often isn't seen as a form of organizing, it has its own way to impact people.”

She is currently a youth reporter for the Boyle Heights Beat, a community newspaper produced by youth.  Published four times a year, the newspaper is supported by Annenberg School of Journalism at the University of Southern California and Spanish language newspaper Hoy.

Lupe is focused on her future and part of that is attending a four year University. She is interested in the fields of Public Policy, communications, social work with an ultimate goal of becoming a correctional counselor. To realize her dream, Lupe makes a trip to UCLA each Sunday to take advantage of an SAT prep class. From her neighborhood it is almost a two hour trip each way, switching between two buses and three trains. She does not complain about the long haul; instead, she talks about how useful the classes are in helping her prepare for the exam next month.
