FSS Program Graduate of the Month: Lakenya Thomas

Lakenya Thomas was unemployed and receiving public assistance when she received her Section 8 voucher in 2004. Six years later, Thomas was selected to join the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program.

The FSS Program, specifically designed for Section 8 tenants, helps participants to identify and reach their educational and career goals by connecting them to services and resources in hopes of helping them achieve economic self-sufficiency.

Before joining the FSS Program, Thomas explained she couldn’t afford anything—not even a decent meal for the day.

“The whole program has been life changing for me. The program helped me rise above and helped me to grow as a person-- as a better person for my kids and show them what it means to set goals and accomplish them.”

Thomas’ goals were to increase her credit score, complete a home buyer class and to find a full time employment.

She is happy to share that she met all of her goals: her credit improved from 519 to 629, she completed her home buyer class and she was hired as a full time driver for Grey Hound.

“I couldn’t have done this by myself. Thank you.”

Thomas graduated from the FSS Program in February 2018. Her next goals are to maintain her credit and buy a home.
